Website performance guide

Understand your website speed report.

A website speed test helps you identify what delays the first visible content, the main page content, and the browser's response to user actions. The SWS Speed Test uses Google Lighthouse results to highlight potential improvements.

One score never tells the whole story. Compare mobile and desktop separately, inspect individual metrics, and use the recommendations to decide what is worth fixing first.

Lighthouse results vs. real-user data

These two types of measurements answer different questions. Your report should clearly distinguish them.

Lab data

Controlled Lighthouse test

A simulated browser run measures loading behaviour under specific device and network conditions. It helps diagnose performance bottlenecks, but results can vary between runs.

Field data · When available

Real visitors' experience

Core Web Vitals field measurements summarize real-user experiences over time. Some websites do not have sufficient public data, and the Google API may not provide every metric.

What do the website speed metrics mean?

Understand the numbers before changing your WordPress or Shopify website.

LCPLab + field

Largest Contentful Paint

When the largest visible piece of content, often a hero image or heading, appears.

Good real-user target: 2.5 seconds or less.
CLSLab + field

Cumulative Layout Shift

How much visible elements unexpectedly move while the page loads or is used.

Good real-user target: 0.1 or less.
INPReal-user field data

Interaction to Next Paint

How quickly the page responds visually after a click, tap or keyboard interaction.

Good real-user target: 200 milliseconds or less.
FCPLighthouse lab

First Contentful Paint

When the first text, image or other visible content appears in the browser.

TBTLighthouse lab

Total Blocking Time

How long heavy main-thread tasks can prevent the page from responding promptly during loading.

SILighthouse lab

Speed Index

How quickly the visible portion of the page fills in during the Lighthouse test.

Practical next steps

How to make your website faster

Start with changes that address a measured bottleneck. Avoid installing extra optimization plugins without understanding what they will change.

  1. 01
    Optimize the main visible image

Resize and compress oversized images, serve responsive formats and avoid lazy-loading the LCP hero image.

  2. 02
    Reduce unnecessary JavaScript

Audit chat widgets, analytics tags, third-party apps and plugins; defer scripts that are not needed immediately.

  3. 03
    Improve CSS and font loading

Limit render-blocking styles, remove unused assets where safe and load critical fonts efficiently.

  4. 04
    Check server response and caching

Investigate redirects, cache configuration, hosting response and CDN behaviour before changing the frontend.

Website Speed Test FAQ

Clear answers to common questions about PageSpeed, Lighthouse and Core Web Vitals.

Is this website speed test free?

Yes. SWS offers a free speed test for publicly accessible websites, subject to the availability and request limits of Google's PageSpeed Insights service.

Why does my Google Lighthouse score change between tests?

Scores can change with server load, advertisements, third-party scripts, content, and test conditions. Compare the same device mode and several runs rather than relying on one number.

Does a good Lighthouse score guarantee good Core Web Vitals?

No. Lighthouse is a controlled lab test. Core Web Vitals use real-user field data when available. A good lab score does not guarantee that every visitor experiences a fast and responsive website.

Why does my report say real-user data is unavailable?

Google may not have enough eligible real-user observations for the tested page or origin, or the API may not return the dataset. Missing field data is not itself a performance failure.

Can this tool help speed up WordPress and Shopify websites?

Yes. Lighthouse identifies performance symptoms regardless of platform. The suggested fix will depend on your theme, installed WordPress plugins, Shopify apps, hosting and page design. Verify each change before publishing.

Will fixing every warning automatically improve my Google ranking?

No. Performance is one part of the overall search experience. Fixing a warning can improve usability, but search rankings also depend on content relevance, search intent and many other factors.
